Drowned Man s Canyon fiasco, the Wests joined the Academy for the Exploratory Sciences a school for expeditioners The Academy has a yearly program that allows the students to make a request to go on an expedition of their choice But when their rival at the Academy, Lazlo Nackley, steals their idea, he is one of the ones to get chosen, and becomes head of the operation It all starts to go downhill when Lazlo s evil, controlling father comes along as a chaperone the nice teacher that is supervising them can t come because he is seasick and wouldn t have been able to help The Wests and Sukey know that they have a hard journey coming on, but there is muchthey aren t expecting. What I liked This was a marvelous sequel to the first book It has all of the steampunk y, futuristic ness that I came to love in the first book It explains someabout how the world got into its current state, with all of the dystopian ness of it The new adventure that the West s go through was cool and exciting, and they really make use of their surrounding events perfectly I think that they go to the Bermuda Triangle although it is called something different, in this world frame , and visit a mysterious island in it The setting is a fascinating place, and plays an important part in the series The characters get stuck on a deserted island, full of unknown animals, and the island isn t charted as existing Like the first book, the book jacket is reversible, and has a blueprint y feel to them, as it shows a machine from the book This is a great adventure story that a lot of kids will like I really like this series, and I can t wait for the next one to come out NOTE I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review I received this book through the Goodreads Giveaway program.I received a beautiful hardback book with a color map on the inside of the cover, as well as a great many illustrations throughout the book A good job was done in the editing and I was not distracted with annoying errors I rate the quality of the book itself as high, perhaps a 5.The storyline is interesting and full of potential The idea of a school teaching explorers and the students going out on expeditions male until many chapters into the book The main characters need feelings, thoughts, descriptions, and backgrounds I found my interest waning because the pace was too slow for me I feel that it is written for kids 9 12.I have read a great many books and reserve 4 star books for very interesting, and 5 star for excellent all around I would rate the book at 3.8, but don t have the ability to do that Great follow up to the first Kit is a dynamic character though no one else is as developed or nuanced as he is, some just straightforward caricatures The use of maps and mapping is phenomenal and overall world building is excellent, but I feel a disconnect with the pace of the book At times too drawn out and then suddenly too quick The blending of steampunk tech, a future without computers, and sudden fantasy lands creatures was welcome in the first, and continues to deliver But this defini Great follow up to the first Kit is a dynamic character though no one else is as developed or definitely felt like a transition novel, not a story in itself But I love the subversive use of maps as decidedly anti imperial, or as much so as possible very excited to receive and review this book, the Expeditioners series It takes place in an alternate future where different countries lands have been found and steam power is the way to go Kit his brother and sister are set on another adventure by their missing father, not really knowing what it is they are looking for or what they will find Adventure steampunk elements make for an exciting story I can t wait to see what the next book will take them. I was excited to see this sequel on the library shelf I knew there must beto the Expeditioners story The political stakes are higher than in the first book, and the exploration gets, um, pretty weird But the descriptions are fascinating, and Kit s character is developing, and I look forward to reading
